Designed by Vasily Degtyaryov and trialled in 1927 before full deployment in 1928, the DP-27 (also known as the DP-28) is the Soviet Union’s classic light machine gun firing the powerful 7.62×54mmR round. Built to be simple, robust, and easy to manufacture, the DP-27 became the Red Army’s standard squad automatic weapon through the 1930s and the brutal years of World War II. Its most striking feature is the round, 47-shot pan magazine mounted on top — a design that gave the gun a unique silhouette and reliable feeding in harsh conditions. Though slower to change magazines than later belt-fed guns, the DP-27 was loved for its durability, predictable rate of fire, and ability to keep going in mud, snow, and dirt. Handling a DP-27 at our Budapest shooting range is a rare chance to feel a piece of 20th-century history under your hands — an unforgettable daytime activity and one of the most historic things to do in Budapest for anyone who likes guns, games, or military cinema. This is the kind of heavy, cinematic weapon that makes museum history feel loud and immediate. Seen in movies: – WWII films and historical dramas depicting the Eastern Front – Archival footage and documentaries about Stalingrad and the Red Army – Period action sequences that favour authentic WWII small arms Featured in games: – Call of Duty (WWII-era titles and mods) – Red Orchestra series and other realistic WWII shooters – Escape from Tarkov and military-sim mods that include historic Eastern Front weapons Used by militaries & forces: – Soviet Red Army (primary user during WWII) – Soviet and allied partisan units across Eastern Europe – Later-use by various post-war and guerrilla forces where surplus weapons circulated Fun Fact: The DP-27’s flat, circular pan magazine is so visually odd it’s become a pop-culture icon — newcomers often spot it in photos and joke it looks like a miniature “flying saucer” sitting on top of the gun. That instantly recognisable silhouette makes the DP-27 feel like a weapon straight out of a gritty history film or a retro video game.
